Hamburg-Rügen Cycle Route
This beautiful route leads you right through the federal state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. You can cycle from Northern Germany‘s largest city, Hamburg, all the way to Rügen, Germany‘s largest island.
On the trail of the medieval trade route
The tour’s ten stages – among them Hamburg, Schwerin, Güstrow, Stralsund and Putbus – lead you to the town of Sassnitz on Rügen. The trail largely follows the medieval trade route connecting the River Elbe with the estuary of the River Oder. In addition to numerous historic sites, the route comprises a national park, three biosphere reserves and three natural reserve.
Suggested route for a one-day tour: 62 km from Ratzeburg to Schwerin
On the tour from Ratzeburg to Schwerin, the Hamburg-Rügen Cycle Route passes through the Schaalsee UNESCO Biosphere Reserve – a natural paradise with vast, hilled landscapes and impressive ancient sites. In Schlagsdorf you can visit the Grenzhus information centre about the former German-German border and the cultural highlight of the tour is Schwerin with its magnificent fairytale castle. Both Ratzeburg and Schwerin are easily accessible by train and provide a choice of overnight accommodation.
