Schleswig-Holstein's first certified long-distance cycle route
But it is also the quality of the route that attracts cycling enthusiasts to the region: Upon initial assessment, the German Cyclists‘ Federation ADFC awarded 3 out of 5 stars in its overall rating to the Old Salt Route – making this trail the first certified long-distance cycle route of the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein.
Suggested route for a one-day tour: 37 km from Lauenburg to Mölln
The Elbe-Lübeck Canal, which connects the Elbe and the Trave, includes a total of seven locks. The first one is to be found at the small harbour in Lauenburg on the Elbe. The adjacent Palmschleuse, a listed building, is Northern Europe’s oldest existing chamber lock. The route leads you along quiet service roads, and upon reaching the picturesque village of Siebeneichen, you will pass by the Elbe-Lübeck Canal’s only cable ferry. The journey proceeds along the historic towpath until you reach the canal’s peak in Mölln – the home of Till Eulenspiegel. The Eulenspiegel Museum in the old town of Mölln provides insights into the life of this legendary trickster.
